Kavaluus, Laura

I am an artist working mainly with animal characters. In my art, animals reflect human feelings, roles and everyday situations. Each character has its own personality and story. Some are light and humorous, others are quiet and observant.

Animal characters give me freedom to explore human themes in a gentle and direct way. My process is intuitive, built in layers, and open to change and coincidence.

Each artwork has a story that can be read on site. I often paint live during the event, letting the process and unfinished moments be part of the work.

Sometimes a character feels familiar – as if it reflects something the viewer already recognizes in themselves. It might make you smile or pause for a moment. And sometimes you return to the same animal again and again, as if it still has something to say. Now and then a character becomes so persistent that it feels less like an artwork to leave behind, and more like something that wants to come along into everyday life. Animals are honest that way: they don’t explain too much, but they are rarely completely silent.

I paint on recycled old wooden frames. Mainly because i want my artwork to be ”ready to hang” but also because i love the concept of making new from old. I paint over and around the frames and that is just me as a person. I don’t like to stay inside the lines or fit in any set frames. Freedom, joy and breaking the rules are my core.
